The gastronomy of Thessaloniki!

From morning bougatsa to meze in Ladadika: a guide to eating Thessaloniki like a local.

It is no accident that Thessaloniki is called the food capital of Greece. Greek, Anatolian, Balkan and Middle Eastern influences meet in every neighbourhood, and every neighbourhood has a flavour of its own.

Breakfast: bougatsa and koulouri

The day starts with warm bougatsa, filled with custard or cheese, or a Thessaloniki koulouri in hand as you walk towards the seafront. If you are staying near Navarinou, you won’t have to look far.

City centre: from souvlaki to the world’s kitchens

Around Egnatia, Kamara and Ippodromiou Square you will find everything: classic souvlaki, Syrian and Armenian flavours, Asian kitchens, brunch spots and award-winning restaurants. There are plenty of vegan options too.

Ladadika and Ano Poli

In Ladadika, meze is a way of life: small plates, tsipouro and good company until late. In Ano Poli, the Upper Town, you eat with the whole city and the Thermaic Gulf at your feet, ideally at sunset.

Seafood in Perea

A few minutes outside the city, the tavernas of Perea serve fresh fish, calamari, prawns and oysters almost with your feet in the sand.

Cook at home too

All Nexus Lodges homes have a fully equipped kitchen. Stop by a farmers’ market or the Modiano and Kapani markets, pick up fresh ingredients and eat like a local at your own table. And if you want tips for something specific, just ask us.
